Special Issue: Territorial transformations and socio-environmental crises: applied geographical approaches to land analysis, planning, and management
No. 60 of 2027
We are calling for submissions of articles for the special issue “Territorial Transformations and Socio-Environmental Crisis: Applied Geographic Approaches to Territorial Analysis, Planning, and Management,” which aims to bring together contributions that analyze contemporary spatial dynamics from the perspective of applied geography and related disciplines, with an emphasis on the use of methodological, technological, and conceptual tools for understanding and addressing current territorial issues.
Recent territorial transformations are associated with complex processes such as urban expansion, changes in land use, pressure on natural resources, the effects of the climate crisis, the intensification of productive activities, and the growing incorporation of geospatial technologies into spatial management. These dynamics generate environmental, social, and economic impacts that require comprehensive approaches capable of integrating geographic analysis with territorial planning, impact assessment, and decision-making based on spatial information.
Purpose of the dossier
The purpose of this special issue is to promote academic and technical discussion on contemporary territorial transformations, encouraging the use of applied geographical approaches that contribute to the understanding of socio-environmental processes and to the design of strategies focused on the analysis, planning, and ecological management of the territory at different scales.
In this context, we seek papers that contribute to the study of territorial transformations and the socio-environmental crisis through the use of geographic information systems, cartography, remote sensing, spatial modeling, geographic data analysis, and other tools specific to the field of geography, as well as research that contributes to the formulation of strategies for territorial planning, management, and development.
Suggested topics
We invite submissions related to, among other things, the following topics:
- Territorial transformations and socio-environmental dynamics analyzed using geographic methods and geospatial tools, including studies on changes in land use, urban expansion, the reorganization of productive activities, and changes in rural and urban landscapes.
- Assessment of environmental, social, and territorial impacts using spatial analysis, geographic information systems, and remote sensing, aimed at generating information for planning, territorial management, and decision-making.
- Territorial planning, zoning, and management in contexts of socio-environmental change, with an emphasis on sustainable development, risk prevention, resource optimization, and the development of territorial policy instruments.
- Application of geospatial technologies, data science, geoanalytics, and artificial intelligence to the study of territorial issues, including the use of spatial data infrastructures, spatial modeling, and the analysis of large volumes of geographic information.
- Human, urban, and political geography applied to the analysis of spatial inequalities, territorial conflicts, well-being, security, and sustainability, incorporating approaches that integrate social, environmental, and economic dimensions into the study of the territory.
Schedule:
Call for papers: March 27, 2026, through July 31, 2026.
Initial editorial committee review: by August 10, 2026.
Peer review process: August 11 through November 13, 2026.
Notification of articles accepted for publication: by November 20, 2026.
Submission of final versions of articles for publication: by December 4, 2026.
Publication of the issue: April 2027.
Type of contributions
We accept original research papers, case studies, methodological developments, technological applications, and comparative analyses that maintain a geographical focus and contribute to the analysis, planning, or management of territory at the local, regional, national, or international level.
Manuscripts must comply with the journal’s editorial guidelines and will undergo the standard peer-review process:
